biggest loser reality

December 17, 2009

Our client Rebecca pointed out this very good article about the “reality” of the Biggest Loser TV show on NBC.

Overall, it is important to note that good weight loss tops out at about 1-2 pounds per week in the “real world.” The results achieved on the Biggest Loser are just not something that one can accomplish safely.

How do they achieve this weight loss?

At least one other contestant has confessed to using dangerous weight-loss techniques, including self-induced dehydration.

And any Google search about the show will bring up plenty of other stories about the safety of the show. After all, 2 of the contestants were hospitalized this season. That’s not good.

Anyone surprised?

We run a Biggest Loser contest in our studio. Of course, in our studio, it all in good fun since we are only focused on taking off weight and keeping it off. It is an extra piece of motivation to help you change your behavior. Because that is what is required. Not some quick fix or a “crash” program.

tips from bob harper

November 11, 2009

Came accross this nice post with 5 exercies and diet tips from everyone’s favorite trainer on the Biggest Loser, Bob Harper.

My favorite:

Nutrition is at least as important as exercise. People who begin a weight loss effort are often totally confused about the role of nutrition. Some think that if they work out, they can eat whatever they want. Not true! But Biggest Loser contestants often come in thinking the reverse, says Harper. “They think they’ll work out a lot and won’t eat at all,” he says. Also not a good strategy. You need to hit the sweet spot: fueling your body enough with healthy foods to giveyou energy to get through the day (and your exercise routine), but not so much that you take in more than you’re burning off.

motiv introduces calorieking

October 27, 2009

This is not the big news, btw.

But I am very pleased to introduce CalorieKing to all our clients.

Calorie King is an online weight-control program that is easy to use. The program features:

  • The CalorieKing Guided Program that helps you build the habits you need to achieve your weight management goals
  • Food & Exercise Diary with drag-and-drop, incorporating an industry leading food database
  • Easy to follow meal plans
  • Practical real world advice to help you achieve your goals
  • Friendly support any time of day or night from the active online community

Any weight loss program has 2 parts: nutrition and exercise. Obviously, we handle the exercise part pretty well in the studio and with our workout plans for outside the studio. But nutrition is equally important. We think Calorie King is just the right program to you help you achieve the nutrition part of your weight loss goals.

The Most Important Number

To lose weight, you need to know your most important number: how many calories you eat every day. To lose weight, you must make sure your calories in – what you eat – are less than your calories out – what you burn off every day. It’s very simple, but it is kinda a pain to do. CalorieKing can help you find a good target number for you and make it easy to track on a daily basis.

Now, this is not a free, internet program. There are plenty of them, but few good ones. However, we are pleased to offer CalorieKing to our clients for 35% off of online price. Just let us know in the studio, and we’ll get you signed up.

be like mike on the biggest loser

February 12, 2009

I was very pleased this week to watch Mike, of the father- son brown team, lose an impressive 13 pounds! This young man worked very hard this week, but the reason I was so pleased was the explanation behind his big weight loss this week. It wasn’t just about the workouts, it was also about his eating, and when I say eating I mean eating enough!

Michael had the unfortunately too common mentality of, if I cut a ton of calories I will lose a ton of weight. Not true.

Thankfully Bob, his trainer, realized this is what Mike had been doing and coached him on how to correctly feed the body. Bob made sure Mike was eating enough calories, frequent meals, and increased his carbohydrate intake. Sounds kind of risky to some of you I am sure, but it kicked Mike’s metabolism into gear and he lost 13 pounds. He also probably had more energy to push himself the way he wanted to all week long.

So the lesson to take away here is that we need to feed and fuel our bodies (granted with healthy foods). Keep eating on a regular schedule to keep your metabolism burning. If we take care of our bodies in the way they deserve, they will in turn, help us reach our ultimate goals.

bob loses his cool on the biggest loser

January 14, 2009

So if I had to train with anyone one the biggest loser it would be Bob. He is an awesome trainer but tends to be more gentle in his demeanor than Jillian….or so we all thought.

This week Bob lost it on one of the contestants during an interval cardio workout. No one has ever seen him that angry. The contestant at the brunt of his outburst was Joelle. Joelle couldn’t seem to push herself past 20 seconds of running on the treadmill. Bob wanted 30 second intervals and Joelle kept stopping at 20. After his outburst and arguing with her, she finally made it to the 30 second mark. Which proved to her and Bob and all of us watching that she could indeed do it and could have done it all along.

What stopped Joelle from pushing was her mind and the “I can’t mentality” Our heads and negative thoughts often stop us from our true potential. The thing is that our bodies can do way more than we can even imagine we just have to keep pushing and keep our minds believing in our abilities. So keep pushing and trust yourself.
